Spider veins and Varicose veins on the leg have standard state of the art treatments. The gold standard for spider veins is sclerotherapy and the gold standard for varicose veins is evaluation of the saphenous vein valves and closure of these valves if they are malfunctioning by either laser or radio frequency catheters.

The treatment of varicose veins and spider veins had undergone dramatic changes over the last ten years and especially over the last three years. Up until around the year 2000, the only available treatment of varicose veins was a surgical procedure called ligation and stripping, which involved removing veins by multiple incisions and using multiple stitches. This operation had about a month of downtime and left patients with many unsightly scars.
