American College of Phlebology Board of Directors
As an ultrasound section member (and former Chair), I receive emails from ACP members with questions about the RPhS credential. I fully endorse the credential, and I hope all sonographers/sonologists who perform Phlebology ultrasound will consider sitting for the examination. I received an email from a member and asked his permission to share our correspondence. The email has a final outcome that is worth bragging about. Read on:

10 Reasons to Fix Your Veins Published October 2009 - Health and Wellness - Collier Edition
Varicose veins, spider veins, venous ulcerations
and chronic venous insufficiency are
common problems that affect millions of
people worldwide. Only in the last few years has the
treatment for all of these conditions changed drastically.
In the past, the only treatment for varicose
veins was a relatively radical surgical procedure
called Ligation and Stripping which required
multiple incisions and multiple stitches resulting in
a leg that traded veins for scars. As far as spider
veins were concerned, the only treatment was a
painful injection of a saline solution which caused
side effects consisting of burning, ulceration and
brownish discoloration. Chronic venous insufficiency
and venous stasis ulcers were treated in the
past only with support stockings and topical cream..... Click here to read more of the article on 10 Reasons to Fix Your Veins

Spider and Varicose Veins - The Bottom Line Published July 2009 - Health and Wellness - Collier Edition
In the United States hundreds of thousands
of men and women are affected by spider
and varicose veins. Initially, it was thought
that the only treatment for varicose veins was a procedure
called stripping. Stripping of the veins
involved multiple stitches with a long recovery and
downtime. In the past the only treatment for spider
veins was injection of the veins (sclerotherapy)
with saline solution. This was a painful treatment
with multiple potential complications including
brownish discoloration, failure to eradicate the
veins, pain with injection, and even the potential for
ulceration of the skin. The treatment for both spider
and varicose veins has evolved to what is now considered
the current state-of-the-art therapies. For
varicose veins, the procedure of choice is laser or
radio frequency closure and for spider veins, injection
sclerotherapy with a foam solution is preferred.... Click here to read more of the article on Spider and Varicose Vein Treatment

Unusual Vein Symptoms Published May 2009 - Health and Wellness - Collier Edition
Over the last eight years the
treatment of the Venous
System has evolved into its
own specialty and has its own
certifying board, called The American Board of
Phlebology. There are currently less than three
hundred physicians internationally certified by
The American Board of Phlebology. Years ago the
only treatment for varicose veins was a procedure
called "Stripping" of the veins which involved
multiple incisions and stitches and, in effect,
resulted in the trading of a vein for a scar. Also,
the treatment for spider veins was only by injecting
a saline solution and this was called "Sclerotherapy':
This saline solution had many side
effects including brownish discoloration, pain
with injections, phlebitis and even ulcerations of
the skin. Over this last eight year period the
state-of-the-art treatment of veins now is Vein
Closure either with a laser or a Radio Frequency
Filament and Sclerotherapy of the veins usually
with a foam solution or with a glycerin solution...
